Nithsdale 0 – 3 Fleet Star (Rudd 2, Jamieson)
After last week’s defeat Fleet wanted to get back to winning ways in this Tweedie cup tie and progress to a home tie against Upper Annandale who waited on the winners. Again changes to the starting line-up were required as Kirk and Gordon were suspended so Fleet decided to go with a 4-3-3 formation. The pace of Gray and Jamieson along with the link up play of captain for the day Rudd was causing the Nithsdale defence some problems. Gray on the right got in behind the Nithsdale defence on ten minutes but his cross was cleared, then Jamieson was put in by Rudd but his touch let him down and the chance was lost. Nithsdale were playing a direct game and had a chance on twenty minutes but the shot sailed over the bar. The midfield three of Durham, Cairnie and R. Hunter were finding space but the Nithsdale midfield was also causing them some issues.
A slight tweak at half time tightened up the Fleet midfield and Fleet were now well in command, passing the ball about well and creating chances. On fifty minutes Fleet took the lead when a great clearance from Hutchison was run onto by Gray and his ball into the middle was clinically finished from the edge of the box by Rudd. Fleet continued to press but were always wary of not giving Nithsdale any chance to get back into the game. On the hour mark, Wilson came on for Durham in the middle and this released Hunter further forward, Jamieson had a chance on the left but could not find the finish or final pass however with twenty minutes left he again outpaced the Nithsdale defence and this time cut inside and fired past the Nithsdale keeper to give Fleet a two nil lead. Malcolm and Prentice came on for Jamieson and Gray but it was Rudd who completed the scoring with fifteen minutes left when Ross Hunter hurdled a challenge on the left before slotting the ball through to Rudd who again fired home. Fleet played out the final minutes in a composed manner and progressed to the next round of the Tweedie cup.

Fleet Star 0 – 4 Newton Stewart
Fleet Star brought Niven, Wilson and Malcolm back into the starting line up with Jamieson and Cairnie missing and Milligan moving to the bench. The first half was a very even affair with both teams creating several chances but nothing that caused either keeper concern until five minutes before half time. From a Newton free kick, Hutchison in the Fleet goal saved well but the rebound was smashed home by McKie giving Newton a half time lead.
Fleet came out looking to sharpen up their attacking presence but within ten minutes found themselves two down when a through ball was miss controlled by Picken in the Fleet defence and Middleton ran onto the ball and chipped Hutchison. Fleet immediately brought on R. Hunter and Gray for Wilson and Malcolm but the second goal had given Newton a spring in their step and although Fleet started to pass the ball better, Newton always looked more likely to increase their lead on the break. With twenty minutes left McKie scored again to extend the lead and finish the game as a tie. With ten minutes later Milligan came on for Durham and Fleet continued to press to get a consolation goal but the Newton defence and keeper were not giving them any real clear chances and with a minute left McCutcheon completed the scoring for Newton making it 4-0.

Fleet Star 1 – 0 Abbey Vale (OG)
Both teams went into this game looking to continue their good seasons. Fleet started the game a little rusty after not having a game last week but the wind and soft ground meant both teams were struggling to put too many passes together. The first half was a very even affair with the only notable effort a Rudd long range shot that was well held by the Vale keeper.
The second half started with a similar outcome, both teams defending and battling well without the final chances. Vale started to get more into the game and brought a fine save from Hutchison in the Fleet goal. Fleet brought on Gray and Malcolm for Jamieson and Durham and with ten minutes left made the break through when a neat ball from Cairnie was flicked goal wards by Rudd, the keeper came out and blocked the shot but could do nothing as the ball rebounded off his defender and rolled agonisingly into the net. Vale came forward now but Fleet were defending well. With five minutes left Wilson replaced the tiring Milligan but the last chance fell to Vale as with a minute left the ball fell to the midfielder at the back post but his shot went past the opposite post and the game finished giving Fleet a scrappy win.

Nithsdale 1 – 2 Fleet Star (Jamieson, Milligan)
Fleet travelled to Nithsdale and again had to make changes, Niven back from several months out injured replaced Muir who was recalled to Dalbeattie and Hutchison replaced Shanks after his one match suspension. Both teams were fighting well and chances were being created but the finishing touch was missing from both teams. The game looked like it was going in at half time all square but with three minutes left Nithsdale found the breakthrough when a through ball was met by the speedy striker who fired home.
Fleet came out after the break and started to put some pressure on the Nithsdale defence. Again chances were being created but the keepers were not being called into action. On the hour mark Rudd turned in the box and was brought down but the referee instead of pointing to the spot judged that the striker had taken a dive and pulled out the yellow card to the disbelief of the striker. With fifteen minutes left a ball into the box was cleared by the Nithsdale defender but only landed at Jamieson’s feet who struck the ball low and hard into the bottom corner of the net tying the game at one all. Both teams continued to go for the win and as the clock ticked down it looked as though both teams were going to take a point each until in the last minute, a corner was swung in by Fleet, Rudd headed the ball which was saved at the far post by the keeper but he could only parry the ball which was rammed home by sub Milligan to secure all three points for Fleet.

Wigtown 2 – 1 Fleet Star (Muir)
Fleet Star travelled to Wigtown having to make several changes to the starting line-up due to Injury, suspensions and unavailability’s. Experienced keeper Kenny Shanks came in to replace suspended Hutchison with Durham, Jamieson, Wilson and Muir coming in for their opportunity due to other absentees.
The game started even with both teams trying to play football on the heavy pitch. It was Fleet who created the first chance of the game when Jamieson outpaced the Wigtown defence down the Fleet left but his shot was smothered and the ball went out for a corner. Wigtown then fought back and from a corner of their own could have taken the lead when Shanks misjudged the ball but fortunately no Wigtown player read the flight and the ball bounced out. On the twentieth minute Muir was released down the right this time and with only the keeper to beat delayed his effort and the shot was well blocked by the keeper. Again the next chance fell to Wigtown and a snap shot from the edge of the box clipped the crossbar and over. Five minutes later Curtis Wilson of Wigtown had the best chance when a cross from the right was met centrally but he could not guide the header on target with the keeper stranded. Both teams were pushing for the lead before the break but neither managed the breakthrough and both teams went in all square at halftime.
Ten minutes into the second half was the turning point in the game, Jamieson won a foot race with Wigtown’s centre half who lunged in and caught the player who was running in centrally on goal, the ref blew for the foul but to the shock of most in the ground produced only a yellow card. Muir took the resulting free kick testing the keeper who saved the shot well before Wigtown counter attacked. The ball broke to Dougan who chipped keeper Shanks, the ball struck the crossbar and was headed home by Adams to give Wigtown the lead. Ten minutes later Wigtown extended their lead when a throw in was received and a through ball was slipped to substitute McHarry who slotted home.
Fleet rallied and started to put some pressure on Wigtown and with fifteen minutes left pulled a goal back when Muir swivelled and struck home from within the box. Fleet now had control of the game and were putting pressure on the Wigtown defence but could not find the deserved breakthrough to tie the game and although a kick out by Adams was only dealt with by a yellow, Wigtown managed to hold out for a two one victory.

Fleet Star 2 – 4 Edu (Jamieson, Rudd)
Edu travelled to Gatehouse for the first time in their history and left with victory after they produced another excellent performance finishing Fleet’s unbeaten run in 90 minutes which had lasted since the 6th September.
The game started with both teams trying to pass the ball about and it was Edu who were finding the better opportunities and on five minutes a diagonal ball found the wide Edu man who raced in but his cross was met by the Fleet defender who cleared well. Edu had the ball in the net five minutes later when again a well worked move found the striker but as he passed the ball into the net the linesman flag went up and the goal did not count. On twelve minutes the Edu striker pulled up with an injury and Edu had to make a substitution, the Zlatan Ibrahimović lookalike came on and it was him who started to run the game for Edu. On Eighteen minutes Fleet also had to make a change when Ally Hunter was replaced by Kevin Jamieson. Fleet got a little more into the game and had a couple of distance shots as well as a free kick but it was Edu who took the lead on twenty minutes when a through ball was met by the striker who run through past Hutchison in the Fleet goal and crossed the ball back to his advancing midfielder who chested the ball into the empty net. Another opportunity came and went for Edu minutes later but the shot was blasted over from close range. Fleet got more into the game in the last fifteen minutes of the first half but still were not able to test the Edu goalie.
Edu started the second half well and went further ahead on four minutes when a run down the right was delivered into the box, the shot was well saved by Hutchison in the Fleet goal but the rebound was finished by the midfielder. Edu were now well on top and went further ahead on the hour mark when again an excellent cross from the right was met by the head of the attacker and into the net. Fleet replaced Cairnie and Hogg with Durham and Malcolm but found themselves again put under pressure by the slick passing of Edu and found themselves 4-0 down on seventy minutes. With fifteen minutes left Jamieson was released down the right and his shot flew past the Edu keeper to pull a goal back for Fleet. Fleet were again ending the half well and with five minutes left Jamieson again was released this time down the left, as the defender and keeper came to close him down he squared the ball to Rudd who fired home to make the score 4-2. In the third minute of 7 played by the ref a free kick was awarded to Fleet in their left back area, an Edu player picked the ball up and rolled it out of the pitch, Hutchison questioned the lack of action with the linesman who dismissed the incident then flagged the referee over and Hutchison was sent off for foul and abusive language.

Crichton 2 – 3 Fleet Star (Picken, R. Hunter, Jamieson)
Fleet Star starter the New Year with a hard fought win against a good young Crichton team. Crichton started the game well and were passing the ball about and pulling the Fleet defence about however without testing Hutchison in the Fleet goal. Although Crichton enjoyed the best of the first half it was Fleet Star that had the best chance within the first thirty minutes when a ball to the back post was met by Liam Malcolm but he couldn’t finish and the chance was lost. On thirty five minutes the deadlock was broken when a poor clearance in midfield by Wilson was collected by Hammond who with the wind behind him stuck the ball over Hutchison and into the roof of the Fleet net. Crichton continued to push for another however Fleet held out and went in at half time only one nil down.
The second half started in a similar form to the first half with Crichton having the upper hand and on fifty minutes they could have extended their lead however a ball to the back post which was met by the striker was majestically kept out by Hutchison. Five minutes later Crichton did extend their lead when another great ball into the box was met by Campbell who swept the ball home. This seemed to spur Fleet into action and they started to use the wind to their advantage and pulled a goal back when from a corner the ball was cleared to sub Jamieson who with a full box in front of him chipped the ball forward to Picken who had stayed up and the big defender waited on the ball to bounce before firing past Cathro in the Crichton goal. Five minutes later on seventy five minutes the ball fell to Ross Hunter thirty five yards out and similar to the first goal he used the wind and let fly and again the ball flew over the keepers head and the game was tied at 2-2. Crichton looked shocked and Fleet could see the chance of victory, with ten minutes left again from a corner the ball was partially clearer by the Crichton defence again it fell to Jamieson who controlled and fired it back towards goal and past Cathro in goal to give Fleet the lead. With the sleety snow now lashing down the players were finding it hard to see against the wind. Durham came on for the injured Jamieson and had to battle hard as Crichton tried to get back on term. With time running out Gordon pulled Darren Johnson back, he turned round and lashed out and subsequently was shown the red card. The ball was lofted into the box but Fleet cleared and the final whistle sounded giving Fleet a hard fought victory.

Crichton 4 – 5 Fleet Star (Rudd 3, Gray, Christie)
Fleet Star travelled to Dumfries to play Crichton on their new 3G facility for the first time without seven of their regular squad. Due to this Fleet started the game with a 3-4-2-1 formation, Liam Malcolm, Ian Cairnie, Kevin Jamieson and Jamie Gray who had just returned from a two month layoff came into the team.
The game starter and Fleet’s new formation was causing some players concerns and this was evident when on three minutes the Fleet back three were caught square and a untracked run from deep allowed Crichton in on goal, the player crossed the ball which Newlands finished giving Crichton the early lead. Fleet’s players started to get to grips with the new formation and Liam Malcolm was starting to get space and find the front three of Jamieson, Rudd and Gray. On five minutes from a corner the ball was cleared by Crichton however Fleet kept the ball live and when the ball was played into the box, the Crichton players failed to clear and Rudd prodded the ball home from ten yards to level the score. The game settled down and both teams were creating chances however it was Fleet that took the lead when on twenty minutes a breakaway by Fleet fell to Jamie Gray on the right side and he outpaced the last defender before hitting a low shot past Crichton goalie Ali Cathro. Ten minutes later Fleet went further ahead when the ball fell to Rudd in the Crichton box, the striker with his back to goal, controlled the ball and hooked the ball over his head floating the ball into the corner of the net and extend Fleet’s lead.
The second half started with Crichton pushing to get back into the game, a move down the left was well blocked by Niven in the Fleet defence then a cross to the back post was well met by the Crichton attacker but Hutchison in the Fleet goal made a point blank save to keep the score at 3-1. Fleet were finding it hard to get into the game in the second half and the pressure by Crichton paid off when a run into the Fleet box by the Crichton midfielder tempted Cairnie into a tackle, the Crichton midfielder went down and the ref pointed to the spot which was dispatched with ease by Hammond. Fleet picked themselves up and on the hour mark a through ball released Rudd as the keeper came out the striker challenged the keeper; however both missed the ball which rolled through the keeper’s legs allowing the striker to complete his hat trick and roll the ball into the empty net. Fleet tried to kill the game off but with twenty minutes left Crichton still believed they could get back into the game a again pinned Fleet back. Another great save by Hutchison along with some glaring misses kept the score to 4-2 until the seventy fifth minute when a ball to the back post was volleyed home by Campbell and within five minutes the scores were level when John MacBeth met a similar diagonal ball to the Fleet back post and again he slotted home to tie the game at 4-4. It was anyone’s game now but with five minutes left Fleet sub Scott Christie who had come on for the tiring Gray on eighty minutes raced onto a pass by Rudd who had been tackled by Cathro in the Crichton goal, as both Cathro and Rudd lay on the ground Christie from a tight angle fired the ball past the defender on the line to put Fleet into the next round of the South Challenge Cup.

Wigtown 1 – 1 Fleet Star, Maxwell (p) (Wigtown win 4-2 on pens)
SEMI FINAL HEARTACHE FOR FLEET
Fleet star entered their first ever cup semi-final full of confidence after going their last eight games undefeated in 90mins of league and cup action, however South of Scotland Champions Wigtown were a different opponent. Fleet made one change to last week’s team with Ally Hunter coming in to replace Keiran Durham who dropped to the bench.
The game started with Wigtown passing the ball about well and pulling about the Fleet midfield who defended well and did not allow the extra man in the middle to create any clear chances. The first shot of the game came from Wigtown but the effort from distance was easily held by Hutchison in the Fleet goal. Fleet started to find their feet and Gordon in the middle fed Hogg who collected the ball drove past the defender but didn’t connect with the ball well and the shot spun out. Both teams had now settled into the game with neither creating any clear opportunities, however on the hour mark a through ball found Maxwell on the right who drove into the box and went down under the challenge of Wilson. The ref blew for a penalty and sent the defender off giving Fleet a perfect opportunity to take the lead. Maxwell himself took the penalty sending the keeper the wrong way and giving Fleet the lead. Wigtown continued to battle well and the experience of former QOS and Kilmarnock midfielder Jamie Adams in midfield helped to keep them driving forward even with a man short and it was his surging run that nearly got the equaliser for Wigtown as he drove through but Niven blocked. Then a long range effort from Jones was spilled by Hutchison in the Fleet goal but he recovered in time as the ball spun towards the goal line, although the Wigtown players claimed it had crossed the line, neither the referee or his assistant flagged and the game continued. Fleet had more space now and Gordon and Wilson in the middle started to create some more chances but the experienced defence of Wigtown were marshalling Hogg and Rudd in the Fleet attack. With a minute to go to half time a diagonal ball to the back post created some issues for Fleet and as Dougan went for the ball Maxwell slid in to collect the ball however again the ref pointed to the penalty spot and booked Maxwell who claimed the assistant referee had his flag up then put it down but the penalty was given. Adams slotted the penalty home and both teams went in level at half time.
The second half started in a similar fashion to most of the first with both teams battling well without creating clear chances. On the hour mark Beck was released down the left, but his shot from a tight angle beat the keeper but also crept past the far post and wide. Wigtown continued to push with their ten men and were always dangerous at corners but Fleet stood tall. With twenty minutes left A. Hunter made a bursting run from a Wigtown corner and Rudd found the full back, the Wigtown keeper came racing out of his goal and as Hunter went past him he blatantly took the Fleet player down and as he was booked earlier in the match, picked up a second yellow and was also sent off. Wigtown tried to replace one of their players with their sub goalie however his number was not on the team lines and manager Mickey Dougan had to take the gloves. Fleet replaced Hunter with Jamieson who immediately was released down the left but his cross was cleared by the Wigtown defence. A swivel and shot by Rudd was then saved well by Dougan and another long range effort was unorthodoxly saved by the keeper’s feet before being picked up. With ten minutes left Hogg collected the ball and as it got away from him, he turned and lunged for the ball, Adams went down under the challenge and with some Wigtown players claiming red the ref agreed pulling out the red card again and Fleet were reduced to ten men. With five minutes left Kirk pulled up with a tight hamstring and Cairnie replaced him however Wigtown continued to cause havoc with the pace of B. Dougan keeping Picken and Niven on their toes. In the last minute of the game a through ball by Maxwell released Jamieson who chipped the ball over the advancing Dougan in goal but the shot agonisingly hit the top of the crossbar and over meaning the game went to penalties.
Again the Fleet boys had gave their all and unfortunately again penalties were to be their downfall as Maxwell and Rudd both could not convert their penalties giving Wigtown a 4-2 penalty victory and a shot at Newton Stewart in the final who likewise beat Crichton on penalties in the other semi-final.
Hutchison, Kirk, Picken, Niven, A. Hunter, Maxwell, Gordon, Wilson, Beck, Rudd, Hogg.

Fleet Star 3 – 0 Heston (Hogg 2, Niven)
After last week’s efforts and lack of cutting edge Fleet freshened things up bringing in Kirk, Ally Hunter and Rudd meaning Ally Beck moved forward into a more advanced midfield role. Heston who were in the top four in the league came to Garries Park looking for revenge from the earlier game when Fleet came out on top at Palmerstone however right from the kick off Fleet were not willing to let them get this. Within twenty seconds Fleet could have been ahead when a ball was played out to Maxwell on the right who fired in a great cross, Hogg connected well but the Heston keeper reacted and just managed to push the header past the advancing Beck at the back post and out for a corner. Fleet were in a buoyant mood and again were unlucky not to take the lead when excellent hold up play from Rudd released Hogg but his shot whizzed over the bar. Fleet were not to wait much longer for the opening goal when a free kick on the left hand side was played into Rudd who again held the ball up before playing it back to Beck, he floated the ball to the back post and a knockdown by Picken found Hogg who this time lashed the shot into the back of the net giving the keeper no chance. Fleet continued to dominate the game however poor decision making in the final third kept the score at one. On twenty minutes Hogg was released again by Rudd but choked his shot wide, two minutes later the same player tried to release Rudd when a shot was the better option. Fleet got a second just before half time which their first half play fully deserved when from a corner on the Fleet right the ball fell to Niven just inside the box and his shot found its way past the crowded penalty area and into the bottom of the goal.
Fleet knew that Heston would come out in the second half but the defence was in no mood to give Heston any way back into this game. Picken blocked a shot and Hutchison was also more than a match for anything the Heston forwards were firing at him. On sixty five minutes Hogg claimed his second and Fleets third to put this game to bed, a well flighted corner from Gordon was met by the big man at the near post and he glanced the ball home. Trialist Charlie Thomson came on for Hogg and could have extended Fleets lead late on when he had several opportunities which the Heston defence blocked with last ditch challenges. Milligan also replaced Ally Hunter with ten minutes to go but Fleet saw the game out to give them an impressive three nil victory and a great performance to match.

Fleet Star 0 – 0 Glasgow Uni (aet, Glasgow Uni win 4-3 on pens)
Fleet star went into this Regional Cup R1 tie missing new signing Rudd, Kirk and brothers Ross and Ally Hunter which gave their squad the opportunity to stake a claim for a starting place. Calum Wilson came into the back four along with James Picken who has been out injured since the beginning of August. Liam Malcolm came into midfield and Kevin Jamieson also got his opportunity upfront. The game started with both teams passing the ball about without testing the opponent’s defences. On ten minutes Hogg played the ball into Jamieson who’s long range shot was well held by the Uni goalkeeper. Five minutes later it was Uni’s turn to test Hutchison when a well worked move down the Fleet right picked out the striker who under pressure from Picken headed wide. The game heated up on the hour mark when a lunging challenge from the Glasgow midfielder had the Fleet bench on their feet claiming it was a dangerous challenge and Malcolm had to receive treatment. Ten minutes later it was Glasgow Uni’s bench who felt aggrieved when Hogg challenged their player and this time he required attention. On both occasions the referee gave the free kicks but no further action to the players.
The second half started in a similar fashion however the earlier injury to Malcolm meant that he had to be replaced by Prentice. Both teams were keeping the ball well but neither had a cutting edge. Fleet’s top scorer Maxwell then tested the keeper but the ball was blocked allowing the keeper to easily save the shot. With time running out both teams pushed for the winning goal and Uni could have grabbed it with five minutes left but the cross from their left eluded everyone and out for a by kick meaning the game went into extra time.
Both teams continued to match each other and the effort of both was excellent. Christie replaced the tiring Jamieson with ten minutes left but the game petered out meaning penalty kicks would be needed to decide this tie.
Fleet were first to take advantage when Hutchison saved from Glasgow Uni’s second penalty however Hogg also missed with the next penalty to again tie the game. Fleet’s Christie then also missed meaning that Glasgow Uni had the opportunity to go ahead. Although Cairnie kept his nerve the Uni taker kept his composure sending them through to play Edu Sports in the next round.

Dumfries YMCA 0 – 6 Fleet Star
After last week’s free weekend Fleet started this game with new signing Craig Rudd up front, Ally Hunter at right back, Brother Ross Hunter in midfield and Ian Cairnie replacing injured Keiran Durham. After previous victories against Dumfries YMCA the Fleet managers were hoping that complacency did not creep into the side. Similar to the last game both teams started the game slowly with neither able to get to grips with the ball and string passes together. After fifteen minutes Fleet started to pass the ball better and support the strikers. On nineteen minutes Rudd was found with a good pass and he turned and released a sharp shot into the bottom of the YMCA net to open his Fleet account and put Fleet ahead. Two minutes later a excellent passing move which started at the Fleet defence and ended up with a through ball to Rudd who released Hogg who again slotted into the same corner to put Fleet two nil up. Three minutes later the score was three when a shot from Ross Hunter was spilled by the YMCA keeper and Hogg was sharpest to fire home from six yards. Rudd thought he had his second and Fleet’s fourth when a great through ball by Ross Hunter found Rudd who controlled and fired home, but the ref adjudged the striker to have handled the ball and chalked the goal off.
The second half started again with Fleet passing the ball well and creating chances and within ten minutes were four up when Hogg when bundled over in the box and Maxwell scored from the spot. On sixty two minutes Rudd got his second and Fleet’s fifth when a through ball by Cairnie was chested down by the striker and his shot went in off the right hand post. Fleet were now in total control and started to freshen things up bringing on Wilson for Kirk, Malcolm for Gordon and Jamieson for Hogg. With fifteen minutes left Malcolm was fouled on the edge of the box and from the free kick Ross Hunter found the bottom corner giving Fleet a six nil victory putting then into the draw for the semi-finals of the Haig Gordon cup.

Dumfries YMCA 0 – 5 Fleet Star
Fleet travelled to the Kingholm to play Dumfries YMCA who they beat at home only two weeks before and again made no mistake to take the three points. The pitch was in good condition after a heavy few days of rain and both teams struggled initially to get the ball under control and make any telling passing moves. Fleet went ahead on twenty minutes when they were awarded a penalty and Maxwell made no mistake from the spot for his eighth goal of the season. Fleet went further ahead on the half hour mark when Stephen Hogg reached a through ball into the box and fired home for his first Fleet Star league goal. YMCA were trying hard but were finding it hard to create any clear chances with the Fleet defence holding firm. Fleet also had other efforts towards the end of the half but poor finishing along with some last ditch defending kept the score at two nil.
Fleet started the second half better and Hogg was again on the score sheet after five minutes when a ball down the right was collected by him and he turned and lashed the ball home. Hogg completed his hat trick on sixty minutes when again a ball into the box fell to the striker and his effort found the net. Fleet replaced Hogg with Gray and were now controlling the game and continued to create chances but again poor finishes kept the score at four. With twenty minutes left Jamieson replaced Malcolm and within ten minutes raced through and finished well to give Fleet a five nil lead. YMCA still continued to fight and started to get more men forward and created a few chances, Johnson who scored against Fleet two weeks ago found himself free at the back post, his shot flew past Hutchison in the Fleet goal but came off the inside of the post and was cleared. YMCA again had another chance but Fleet held out to finish the game with a clean sheet.

Saints 1 - 1 Fleet Star (Thomson)
Fleet Star rue missed chances
Fleet star went into this local derby full of confidence after their previous two wins however in the first five minutes both teams looked nervous with neither team getting the ball down and passing it well. On seven minutes a clearance from Wilson was miss judged by the Saints defence and Thomson run onto the through ball and rounded the keeper and finished to give Fleet the lead. Saints Alexander and Middlemass were starting to look lively and were creating the odd chance which the Fleet defence were coping with. On twelve minutes Alexander was released down the Saints right and his cross found Middlemass at the back post who slotted the ball home to tie the game at one each. Both teams had now settled into the game and Fleet then created the next chance when again a through ball found Thomson who beat the offside trap and with only the keeper to beat he tried to go round him again but this time the keeper made him go wide and the defender got back to clear. The rest of the half was very even with both teams creating the odd chance without either keeper being tested.
After the half time break Fleet came out with belief that they could go on and win this game and started to pin Saints back. Thomson again had a chance, Gray had a shot from the edge of the box that fizzed past the post and Maxwell had a shot well saved by Saints keeper. Saints also were looking dangerous on the break and Middlemass again had a chance which he put past the post. Thomson was replaced by Milligan and the pace Fleet had up front was causing the tiring Saints defence problems. Milligan was next to have a chance but from the edge of the box tried to find fellow sub Prentice who had came on for Gray when he was probably better placed to take the shot. With ten minutes left Fleet from a corner had the Saints defence in a scramble, Kirk had his first effort blocked and as the ball rebounded to him he sweetly struck a shot which rattled the crossbar bounced down on the line and was then cleared by the Saints defence. With five minutes left Saints were reduced to ten men when from a Saints throw in Durham nudged Parker as he went to take the throw in, Parker kicked out at Durham and was shown the red card with Durham receiving a yellow. Fleet continued to press for the winner but were always wary of the counter attack and in the last minute thought they had won it when a neat passing move down their right found Milligan in the Saints box who turned and fired a shot which skift the far post ending the game as a tie.

Fleet Star 8 – 1 Dumfries YMCA (Muir 3, R. Hunter, Gordon, Maxwell (p), Kirk, Durham)
Fleet Star made it two wins in a row with a convincing win against new south team Dumfries YMCA. They gave new signing Ally Beck his first start at left back as well as bringing Ian Cairnie back into the starting line-up and gave Jamie Gray a run out up front. After lasts weeks cup win against Creetown Fleet were hoping to get a good start in this game and went ahead after 30 seconds when Ross Hunter fired a low cross into the box from the right touch line and caught the YMCA keeper out at his near post. YMCA recovered well and started to play the ball about to the frustration of the Fleet team. Fleet were working hard but a lack of movement off the ball was causing the man on the ball to play harder long balls which the YMCA defence were able to defend. On fifteen minutes Fleet managed to get behind the YMCA defence and loanee Tommy Muir on his last game before the end of his months loan ended reached the through ball and as the keeper came out he shot which was saved by the keeper but rebounded off the striker and into the net to give Fleet a two goal lead. YMCA again got into the game and a through ball was cut out by Raymond Gordon who under some pressure tried to play the ball back to keeper Shaun Hutchison, unfortunately for the midfielder the pass did not have enough power and the attacker nipped in before Shaun and poked the ball to the back post where Ryan Johnson who reduced the defecate. This spurred Fleet back into action and within a minute they were two goals ahead again when Muir again broke through the YMCA defence and slotted home to put Fleet in at half time three one up.
Fleet replaced Jamie Gray with Corey Thomson at half time and they relaxed more and started to play the ball about better. On fifty minutes Tommy Muir completed his hat trick and made it six goals in the four loan games he has played and five minutes later Fleet went further ahead when Raymond Gordon opened his Fleet account with a shot from the edge of the box which found the bottom corner. Fleet replaced Muir with Trialist Milligan. On seventy minutes Josh Maxwell scored number six from spot after Thomson was brought down. The next five minutes turned silly when YMCA number ten kicked out at Thomson after already being booked and was given his marching orders. Then from a corner, Jim Kirk scored with a header to continue his scoring and put Fleet seven one up. YMCA then were reduced to nine men when Thomson ran into the YMCA box and was blocked off, the striker then pulled the defender to the ground and the defender reacted which the referee saw sending the defender off and luckily only booking the Fleet striker. Fleet calmed their striker down and completed the scoring when sub Keiran Durham completed a well worked move to give Fleet their best south of Scotland win.

Fleet Star 6 – 4 Creetown (Muir, Thomson 2, Maxwell (p), Kirk, Gray)
Fleet had several players back for this Haig Gordon cup tie against Creetown at Garries Park. Again Fleet started well and went ahead on two minutes when Thomson broke down the right and his low cross was parried into the path of the on running Muir who finished well. Like many games this season Fleet had other opportunities to go further ahead but were not ruthless in front of goal and paid the price within fifteen minutes when a deflected shot flew past Hutchison in the Fleet goal. Fleet picked themselves up and on twenty five minutes Thomson got on the goal sheet when a ball looped up in the box and he jumped above the oncoming Creetown goalie to head home. For the second week in a row Fleet found themselves behind at half time even though they had played reasonably well as again defensive hesitation let Creetown in twice to lead three two at half time.
Fleet brought on Cairnie at half time and moved Muir upfront and this change paid dividends straight away as a minute into the second half a shot from Muir was adjudged to have struck the defenders hand by the ref when it looked to be by his side and Maxwell levelled the game from the spot. Fleet used this momentum and on fifty minutes a shot come pass found Thomson at the back post who stroked home to give Fleet the lead again. Fleet went further ahead on sixty minutes when new signing Jim Kirk half volley home from a Gordon corner to give Fleet some breathing space. Creetown were not lying down and to their credit, pulled a goal back with twenty minutes left. Fleet to their credit settled the game and were playing some good passing moves and within thirty seconds of coming off the bench substitute Gray collected the ball in the box from the lively Thomson, swivelled past the defender and dispatched it past the Creetown keeper to finish the scoring and progress Fleet to the second round of the cup.

Fleet Star 3 - 4 Crichton (Muir, Thomson, Maxwell)
Fleet gave several players a chance to shine in this cup tie including new signing Jim Kirk. Fleet came out well and should have been in front after three minutes when the ball broke to Gray and with an open goal couldn’t control his shot. Fleet went ahead on ten minutes when Thomson broke down the right and his low cross was converted by Muir to give Fleet a well-deserved lead. Fleet continued to press and had other chances which they did not take. On thirty minutes Fleet paid for their missed chances when Johnson broke through the Fleet defence and finished to level the scores. Worse was to come for Fleet and with two minutes before the break Johnson again found himself clear and this time squared to his team mate to give Crichton a half time lead.
Fleet came out hoping to continue the form they showed in the first thirty minutes but continued the last fifteen minutes form and Crichton capitalised by scoring a further two goals. Fleet withdrew a defender and brought on Hogg to try and get something from this cup tie but with Durham feeling ill Co-manager Adams came on. Fleet now went more direct and the additional presence up front gave Thomson more space and with fifteen minutes to go Thomson broke the Crichton defence and with only the keeper to beat delayed his shot allowing the keeper to block. Two minutes later he made amends when he broke the offside trap and slotted home to pull a goal back. A minute later the game was on a knife edge when again Thomson broke through rounded the keeper and from a tight angle Maxwell took the shot and made the score four three. With over six minutes left Fleet pressed forward and had other half chances before with time running out a ball into the Crichton box was met by Niven at the back post but the Crichton keeper got a hand to it and the defender cleared. With time running out Fleet had one final chance when Muir was tackled in the Crichton box but as the Fleet team claimed for a penalty the ref waved the appeals away and Crichton held on to progress to the next round.

Abbey Vale 1 – 2 Fleet Star (Muir)
Fleet travelled to New Abbey to play Abbey Vale and went straight away on the attack. Holt in the Vale goal made several excellent saves to keep out the Fleet attackers early on as well as some poor finishes kept the score level. Vale also had some chances but nothing to trouble Hutchison who was back in the Fleet goal after his hand injury that had kept him out of the team for several weeks and the first half finished with no goals.
The second half started in a similar style with Fleet again missing the odd chance. On the hour mark Vale went ahead when from a corner Hutchison missed the flight of the ball which landed at the foot of the attacker at the back post who scrambled it home. Fleet tried to get back on level terms but Vale now had something to hang onto and were defending well. Hogg was sent on and with fifteen minutes to go he drove through the Vale defence and slotted the ball to on loan Muir who finished to level the score. Fleet now looked to have the impetus but were shocked when a Hutchison threw the ball out to midfielder Hunter who was closed down well by True who nicked the ball and chipped the ball over the stranded Hutchison to give Vale all three points.

Fleet Star 0 – 4 Wigtown
After Tuesday’s win Fleet went into this game with confidence and hope but after five minutes the game was over after two strange (shall we say) decisions by the referee. League champions Wigtown started the game well and Dougan found himself attacking the Fleet box after a minute. Wilson came across and made a leg movement towards Dougan who did not stumble or go down but the ref blew and pointed to the spot to the disbelief of the Fleet team. Wigtown dispatched the penalty but a stranger decision came on five minutes when a cross from the Wigtown right into the Fleet box saw Fleet midfielder bundled into by the Wigtown attacker as the ball landed, again the ref blew and instead of giving a free kick to Fleet to the astonishment of both teams and benches blew again for another penalty and also booked the Fleet midfielder. The rest of the half was evenly played without either team taking any of the chances.
Wigtown went on in the second half to add another two goals and in the end won this game comfortably but as usual the talking point unfortunately was the first five minutes of the game and the ref’s decisions.

Heston 1 - 3 Fleet Star (Maxwell (p), Thomson 2)
After Saturday’s defeat Fleet wanted to get back to winning ways in this rearranged game against high flying Heston at Palmerston Park. Calum Shanks replaced dad Kenny in goal and brother s Ally and Ross Hunter came into the team along with Jamie Gray up front. The pace of Gray and Thomson in attack were causing Heston problems and on five minutes went ahead when Thomson went through and shot past the Heston keeper to put Fleet one nil up. The Fleet defence were marshalling the Heston front line well as well as creating chances for the midfielders. On twenty five minutes Fleet went further ahead when a long kick was misjudged by the Heston centre half and Gray ran on and went past the keeper who pulled him down. The ref pointed to the spot and sent Heston’s keeper McCulloch off. Maxwell disposed the penalty and Fleet went in at half time two up.
Heston rallied at the start of the second half and on fifty five minutes pulled a goal back when a through ball was collected by the striker and chipped Shanks in the Fleet goal with a great strike. Fleet composed themselves and on sixty five minutes went two goals ahead again when Gray again drove through and squared the ball to Thomson who finished for his second and Fleet’s third of the game. Heston continued to try and get back into the game but Fleet held firm and claimed a great result.

Edu Sports 4 – 3 Fleet Star (Maxwell 2, Cairnie)
Fleet Star travelled to Hamilton to play new league team Edu sports and tried a new 3-5-2 formation partly down to missing players. Co-manager Andrew Davies came into a new look back three with Niven and Wilson. Maxwell and Malcolm played the wingback positions and Gordon, Durham and Cairnie making up the middle of the park, Hogg partnered Thomson up top. The game started well for Fleet with Maxwell opening the scoring on five minutes when the ball broke to him at the back post and he shot low under the Edu keeper. Edu were playing the ball about well and after the goal Fleet struggled to get to grips with the 3G surface. Edu found themselves level after fifteen minutes when Edu crossed from the right and the striker collected the ball, turned and shot low into the corner. Fleet went ahead again within ten minutes when a similar chance fell to Maxwell again and once again he controlled the ball and fired home. Edu levelled for a second time when they got behind the fleet defence and crossed for the striker to fire home from close range.
In the second half Edu started well again but Fleet started to pass the ball about better but it was midway through the half before any further goals came. Edu again got behind the Fleet defence and fired home to take the lead. Fleet rallied and within five minutes were level when Cairnie picked the ball up at the edge of the Edu box and unleashed a great shot which found the top corner of the goal. This game looked like it was going to be a tie but Edu managed to again breach the Fleet defence and a simple cut back from the touchline gave the attacker the simple task from six yards out again. Fleet brought on Williamson, Mason and Milligan and had chances in the last ten minutes but could not find another reply.

Fleet Star 1 - 0 Creetown
After Saturday’s defeat Fleet were hoping for three points from this game. Several positional charges were made along with one change through injury which seemed to give Fleet a more balanced attacking feel. Again Fleet started well and were passing the ball about, Creetown also tried to get on the ball and the game was being played in the correct passing manner. The first chance of the game fell to Fleet’s Hutton who drove through the Creetown defence and with only the keeper to beat shot wide. Fleet then won several corners and their players were getting on the end of them but could not guide the ball on target. Creetown were next to create a chance when Hutchison in the Fleet goal dwelled on the ball and the Creetown striker got a challenge in but Maxwell was there to clear. From the resulting corner Houston went close but again did not find the target. Hutton then had another chance which again he was unable to score with and both teams went in level at half time.
The second half was again fought in the middle of the park with Gordon, Hunter and Durham creating chances for Fleet and Beggs creating similar for Creetown. The break through arrived on 57 minutes when Mason held the ball up finding Williamson on the left who in turn slipped Hutton in and it was third time lucky for him as he fired past the Creetown goalie to put Fleet one up. Five minutes later the same player could have finished off Creetown when again he broke through, rounded the keeper but saw his shot cleared off the line by the retreating defender. Creetown again had a chance but Hutchison and the defenders were in no mood to give anything away. Thomson came on for Williamson and had a couple of good runs early on. Hogg replaced the tiring Mason but it was Creetown sub Landers who had the best subs impact, he started to run at Fleet’s left back Wilson and won several free kicks wide which Fleet done well to defend. Milligan came on for the lively Hutton with five minutes left and Fleet managed to hold out giving them their first home win for several years.
To add to their joy the match was also being played for the Ferguson trophy which these two teams play for each year.

Upper Annandale v Fleet Star
Fleet Star travelled to Moffat to play new South of Scotland team Upper Annandale knowing they were in for a hard game. Fleet started well and after five minutes found themselves ahead, a through ball found Mason who slipped past the defence and finished well past the Upper’s goalkeeper. Hutton was causing some issues down the Fleet left but Fleet could not get anyone on the end of the crosses and the score stayed the same.
